Algerian Rai Music


Algerian folk music dating back to 1920’s. It developed from the city of oran which was primarily a poor population
or shepherds. It came from people living in Bedouin village. It is a mix of Spanish, French, African and Arab.
The songs usually highlight social and economic issues.
Often associated with the music of Algerian youth giving expression to cultural freedom.
Dominant Instruments -
Drums, Reed Flute and also western influence such as violins, accordions as well as electronic instruments
such as guitars and keyboards.
Dominant Scales -
Uses typical diatonic scales
Dominant rhythm -



Rhythm 4/4 and is Vivica (lively)

Comparisons and Differences There are some similarities between Cham and Rai as they both follow basic diatonic scales and western melodic structure. B oth have similar melodic influences found in western and Eastern European music. The Gagaku music is very different to the other music I have decribed, as this music as has absolutely n o western influences, diatonic scales or distinguishable repetitive beat.

Gaguku - Japan This music is based on sacred performances from the 5t and 7th century it has korean and chinese influence. It was not originally performed in public and it was known as elegant music. Dominant instruments -  There is a large ensemble of musicians usually between 16-30. This means there is a large selection of instruments. It uses traditional japanese instruments such as the sho (mouth organ), hichiriki (double reed flute), ryuteki (transverse flue), kakko and taiko drums, the shoko (bronze gong) and the koto and the biwi (Lutes). Dominant scales - There appears to be no western diatonic scale influence in these scales, and the melody is very monophonic (Long sustained melody). It is clearly meant to be slow meditative, music of spiritual influence.
